Foundation and development

After the division of Germany and Berlin came to an end, Landesbank Berlin -Girozentrale- was founded as a bank subject to public law on 1 October 1990. At the same time, the city's savings banks that had been separated into east and west for more than 45 years, were transferred to Landesbank Berlin and since then have formed the joint Berliner Sparkasse. LBB's history even goes back to the Berliner Sparkasse of 1818, as the predecessor of today's LBB is actually the "Girozentrale" department set up in 1920.

As at 1 January 2006, Landesbank was transformed into a stock corporation in accordance with the Berlin Savings Bank Act of summer 2005. At the same time, the State of Berlin made Landesbank Berlin AG the parent company of the public-law Berliner Sparkasse. Berliner Sparkasse is now operated as a branch of Landesbank Berlin AG.
